Amazon agrees to invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic

See how this story connects

Amazon said on 25 September 2023 it would invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic for a minority stake. AWS became Anthropic’s primary cloud provider, and Anthropic agreed to use AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to train and deploy future models. Anthropic’s models were to be offered to AWS customers through Amazon Bedrock.

Why it matters

Anthropic’s frontier training became tied to Amazon’s cloud and in-house chips, as OpenAI’s was to Microsoft Azure, its exclusive cloud provider.
