China’s AI compute access expected to double in 2027, with US-designed chips about 65 per cent

See how this story connects

The Institute for Progress projects that AI compute available to Chinese entities will expand from about 4.6 million to 8.8 million H100-equivalents in 2027, with US-designed chips accounting for about 65 per cent of that capacity. Remote access via overseas cloud networks is forecast to reach 2.8 million H100-equivalents by the end of 2027, up from roughly 1 million in 2026. The Washington-based institute tallied domestic chips, legal imports, smuggled processors and remotely accessed compute to reach these figures.

Why it matters

US-designed chips are projected to supply about 65 per cent of the AI compute available to Chinese entities in 2027, an indication of continued reliance on foreign hardware.
