Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan announced on 24 April 2023 a Foundation Model Taskforce with £100 million of start-up funding. Its job was to build UK capability in foundation models such as large language models and to support their safe adoption across the economy. The taskforce was later renamed the Frontier AI Taskforce and became the AI Safety Institute in November 2023.
