UK renames its AI Safety Institute the AI Security Institute

See how this story connects

Technology Secretary Peter Kyle announced at the Munich Security Conference on 14 February 2025 that the AI Safety Institute would become the AI Security Institute. Its focus moved to AI misuse for chemical and biological weapons, cyber-attacks and crimes such as fraud and child sexual abuse, with a new criminal misuse team working with the Home Office, and the government said it would not focus on bias or freedom of speech. The same day the government’s Sovereign AI unit signed a memorandum of understanding with Anthropic on public services and science.

Why it matters

Developers sharing models with the UK institute for testing now face evaluations aimed at national-security and crime risks, while bias and speech questions sit outside its remit.
