UK white paper leaves AI oversight to existing regulators under five principles

See how this story connects

The UK government published ‘AI regulation: a pro-innovation approach’ (CP 815) on 29 March 2023. It set five cross-sector principles, on safety and security, transparency, fairness, accountability, and the right to contest outcomes, for existing regulators to apply in their own sectors, and said legislation could follow to make regulators take the principles into account. Its consultation closed on 21 June 2023.

Why it matters

Companies using AI in the UK were to answer to their usual sector regulators, each applying the same five principles, while the EU was negotiating a single AI law.
