UK keeps AI with existing regulators and asks them for AI plans by 30 April

See how this story connects

On 6 February 2024 the UK government published its response to the consultation on its March 2023 AI regulation white paper. It kept the sector-based approach run by existing regulators, gave them £10m to build AI skills and tools, and asked regulators including Ofcom and the Competition and Markets Authority to publish their AI approach by 30 April. It also set out early thinking on targeted binding requirements for developers of the most capable general-purpose AI systems, and announced nearly £90m for nine research hubs and a responsible AI partnership with the US.

Why it matters

UK companies were told sector regulators would lead, with binding rules considered only for the most capable models, and regulators such as Ofcom and the CMA had to publish how they would apply the five principles within three months.
