Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 widens when UK firms may use automated decisions
See how this story connectsThe Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 received Royal Assent on 19 June 2025. It lets organisations make decisions based solely on automated processing in wider circumstances, provided people are told about significant decisions, can make representations, can challenge them and can get human intervention. It also adds a recognised legitimate-interests ground and new complaint-handling duties, with changes commencing in stages over roughly 2 to 12 months.
Why it matters
Employers, lenders and public bodies using AI for decisions about people in the UK gain more room to automate and must build the required safeguards and complaint routes.
