Australia’s National AI Plan relies on existing laws and drops a standalone AI act
See how this story connectsIndustry Minister Tim Ayres released the National AI Plan on 2 December 2025. The government chose to rely on existing laws instead of standalone AI legislation, the approach pushed by former minister Ed Husic, saying it would monitor AI and respond to challenges as they arise. The plan covers data centre investment, worker reskilling, the GovAI platform for public services and a $29.9 million AI Safety Institute from 2026.
Why it matters
Companies deploying high-risk AI in Australia face no new AI-specific duties for now, and compliance runs through existing privacy, consumer and sector laws.
