Australia proposes 10 mandatory AI guardrails and issues a voluntary safety standard

See how this story connects

Industry Minister Ed Husic released a proposals paper on 5 September 2024 setting out a definition of high-risk AI, 10 mandatory guardrails and three ways to legislate them: adapting existing laws, new framework legislation, or a cross-economy AI Act. The Voluntary AI Safety Standard, published the same day and in effect at once, has 10 guardrails; the first nine match the proposed mandatory ones. Consultation closed on 4 October 2024.

Why it matters

Organisations using AI in Australia got a voluntary standard to follow at once and a draft of the duties they could face in high-risk settings if Parliament legislated.
