Australia will legislate national AI standards and sets up an Office of AI
See how this story connectsPrime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government will legislate Australian Standards for AI, expected early in 2027, and opened an Office of AI in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet from the same day. The first standards target large data centres, which would have to underwrite their own new power supply, pay their full share of grid connection costs, cut demand when the grid needs it and use water efficiently. The release also says no company should train AI on Australian creative works without the creator’s control.
Why it matters
Australia’s December 2025 plan relied on existing laws, and this commits it to AI-specific legislation, starting with conditions on data-centre builders and AI training on Australian content.
