India AI Governance Guidelines

In forceGuidelineNon-binding

Principle-based national framework built on seven ‘sutras’ (e.g. trust, people first, innovation over restraint) that relies on existing laws instead of a new AI statute. It recommends an AI Governance Group supported by a Technology & Policy Expert Committee, with the existing IndiaAI Safety Institute providing technical expertise, and voluntary industry measures, techno-legal tools and a national AI incident database.

Why it matters

This is India’s official governance stance: no standalone AI law for now, so compliance is driven by existing laws (IT Act/IT Rules, DPDP Act, sector regulators) plus voluntary commitments.
