Latin American and Caribbean ministers adopt the Santiago Declaration on ethical AI

See how this story connects

At a ministerial summit in Santiago de Chile on 23 and 24 October 2023, organised with UNESCO and the development bank CAF, Latin American and Caribbean governments adopted the Santiago Declaration to promote ethical AI. They agreed to set up a working group, led by Chile, toward an intergovernmental AI council for the region under UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, and each country was to name a focal point.

Why it matters

Governments across Latin America and the Caribbean set up a shared forum on AI policy, giving smaller states a channel to coordinate rules and capacity with larger neighbours.
