SAG-AFTRA ratifies studio deal requiring consent and pay for AI digital replicas

See how this story connects

SAG-AFTRA members ratified the 2023 TV and theatrical contracts on 5 December 2023, with 78.33% in favour on a 38.15% turnout, after a 118-day strike from 14 July to 9 November. The deal, reached with the AMPTP on 8 November, requires informed consent and compensation for creating and using digital replicas of performers, living or dead, and is worth more than $1 billion in new pay and benefit funding.

Why it matters

Studios using AI to replicate actors in the US had to get consent and pay for it, and the union carried these terms into later video game and TV talks.
