Hollywood writers end their strike with contract limits on AI-written material
See how this story connectsThe Writers Guild of America’s leadership voted on 26 September 2023 to end a strike of almost five months from 12:01 am the next day, after a tentative agreement with the studios, with members voting on ratification from 2 to 9 October. The contract, running from 25 September 2023 to 1 May 2026, says AI cannot write or rewrite literary material, AI output does not count as source material, studios cannot require writers to use AI and must disclose AI-generated material they hand over. The guild reserved the right to argue that training AI on writers’ work is prohibited.
Why it matters
Screenwriters won contract terms that keep writing credit and pay with people when studios use generative AI, and actors bargained over AI the same year.
