US AI Safety Institute agrees pre-release model testing with OpenAI and Anthropic

See how this story connects

The US AI Safety Institute at NIST signed memorandums of understanding with Anthropic and OpenAI on 29 August 2024. They give the institute access to major new models from each company before and after public release, for joint research on evaluating capabilities and safety risks and on ways to reduce them, with feedback to the companies coordinated with the UK AI Safety Institute. Director Elizabeth Kelly called the agreements just the start.

Why it matters

Two leading US labs agreed in writing to let a federal body examine their major new models before launch, with the UK institute involved in the feedback.
