NIST publishes AI Risk Management Framework 1.0 for voluntary use

See how this story connects

The US National Institute of Standards and Technology released version 1.0 of its AI Risk Management Framework on 26 January 2023 at a virtual launch with NIST Director Laurie Locascio, Deputy Commerce Secretary Don Graves and Alondra Nelson of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The framework is for voluntary use and helps organisations build trustworthiness into the design, development, use and evaluation of AI systems. NIST says it was written through an open, consensus-driven process.

Why it matters

US agencies and companies got a shared, voluntary method for managing AI risk, which the October 2023 executive order then used as the base for NIST’s generative AI guidance.
