Japan approves up to ¥590bn more for chipmaker Rapidus, including back-end work
See how this story connectsJapan’s trade minister said on 2 April 2024 that METI would give Rapidus up to ¥590 billion more after an expert review. Up to ¥536.5 billion goes to its existing front-end chipmaking project and up to ¥53.5 billion to a new project on advanced back-end processes.
Why it matters
Japan is paying directly for a domestic leading-edge foundry, which would give AI chip designers a supplier outside Taiwan and Korea if Rapidus reaches volume.
