Japan adds 23 chipmaking tool types to its export licence list from 23 July

See how this story connects

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced on 23 May 2023 that 23 types of advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment would need individual export licences from 23 July 2023. The list covers 11 deposition tools, 4 lithography tools, 3 cleaning tools, 3 etching tools, 1 annealing tool and 1 inspection tool; the rules do not name China.

Why it matters

Japanese makers of these chipmaking tools need a licence for each export, which lets Tokyo refuse shipments to Chinese fabs without naming China.
