BIS Annual Economic Report devotes a chapter to AI and central banks
See how this story connectsThe Bank for International Settlements published its 2024 Annual Economic Report on 30 June 2024 with a chapter titled “Artificial intelligence and the economy: implications for central banks”. It says AI can cut costs in compliance, fraud detection and credit scoring, and warns of reliance on a few AI providers, cyber attacks, bias in lending and herding when many firms use similar models. It calls on central banks to build data and AI capability and share tools through a community of practice.
Why it matters
Central banks were told by their own bank that AI affects both their price and financial stability mandates and their daily operations, and that they need in-house data and AI skills.
