BIS Project Aurora finds shared machine learning detects money laundering networks better

See how this story connects

The BIS Innovation Hub’s Nordic Centre concluded Project Aurora on 31 May 2023 with a 103-page report. Using a synthetic payments dataset with embedded laundering patterns, it tested machine learning, network analysis and privacy-enhancing technologies across institutions and borders. It found that collaborative analysis and learning detects money laundering networks more effectively than banks screening their own transactions in isolation.

Why it matters

Central banks tested whether banks could pool payments data for AI-based anti-money-laundering checks without exposing customer data, a question that bears on how compliance teams share information.
