Getty Images said on 17 January 2023 that it had begun proceedings in the High Court of Justice in London against Stability AI. Getty claims Stability AI copied and processed millions of its copyrighted images and their metadata without a licence for its own commercial benefit.

Why it matters

The case asked whether UK copyright and trade mark law reach an image generator trained on a photo library’s pictures, a question UK developers and rights holders waited on until the 2025 judgment.
