Meta delays its new business terms to 20 November after publishers object to AI scraping

See how this story connects

Meta has put back the start of its new business terms from 30 October to 20 November 2026 after publishers said the terms could let it scrape news sites for AI training. Spokesperson Daniel Roberts told The Verge the extra time is to explain to partners what is changing and what is not, how Meta uses web crawlers, and that content owners can still use robots.txt to signal preferences. Meta had already removed the word “training” from the terms; legal experts quoted by The Verge said that did not rule out the use. The News/Media Alliance wrote to Mark Zuckerberg on 22 October demanding revisions, and digital advertisers and publishers in the EU and the UK asked regulators to make Meta halt the terms.

Why it matters

Publishers that use Meta’s platforms have until 20 November to find out whether the terms give Meta a licence to use their pages for AI training.
