EvolutionaryScale announced ESM3 on 25 June 2024, a 98bn-parameter generative model of protein sequence, structure and function trained with over 10^24 FLOPs. It designed esmGFP, a fluorescent protein 58% similar to its closest known natural relative, which the team estimated at over 500 million years of evolution away. The company released a 1.4bn-parameter open version and raised $142m led by Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross and Lux Capital, with AWS and NVIDIA’s NVentures.

Why it matters

Protein engineers got downloadable weights for a smaller ESM3 model and a lab-tested example of AI designing a working protein far from any natural sequence.
