European Commission creates the AI Office to supervise general-purpose AI models

See how this story connects

The European Commission published its decision establishing the European AI Office inside DG CONNECT on 24 January 2024. On 29 May it set out the Office’s structure from 16 June: five units, with more than 140 staff planned, and a mandate to enforce the AI Act’s rules for general-purpose AI models, test and evaluate those models, request information from providers and coordinate codes of practice.

Why it matters

Providers of general-purpose AI models serving the EU now had one Commission body, with its own AI safety unit, that would supervise them and could sanction them under the AI Act.
