New Zealand publishes its first national AI strategy, focused on business adoption

See how this story connects

Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Shane Reti released New Zealand’s first national AI strategy, the Strategy for Artificial Intelligence: Investing with Confidence in July 2025. It concentrates on businesses adopting AI over building foundation models and takes a light-touch, principles-based approach that relies on existing privacy, consumer protection and human rights law. Voluntary Responsible AI Guidance for Businesses came out with it, and the strategy cites Microsoft research that generative AI could add NZ$76 billion to the economy by 2038.

Why it matters

Firms using AI in New Zealand face no AI-specific law and are directed to voluntary guidance and existing statutes.
