New Zealand sets a public service AI framework built on the OECD principles

See how this story connects

New Zealand’s Government Chief Digital Officer published the Public Service AI Framework for agency leaders and practitioners, dated 29 January 2025. It adopts five OECD AI principles, following a June 2024 Cabinet decision, and sets a work programme with six pillars: governance, guardrails, capability, innovation, social licence and global voice. Agencies are encouraged to align with it, but it is not binding.

Why it matters

New Zealand public service agencies and their AI suppliers got a common reference for using AI, with guardrails set by guidance instead of law.
