Australia’s interim response on safe AI weighs mandatory rules for high-risk uses

See how this story connects

The government published its interim response to the 2023 Safe and Responsible AI consultation on 17 January 2024, after more than 500 submissions. It said it would consider mandatory testing, transparency and accountability safeguards for AI in high-risk settings while leaving low-risk uses largely unimpeded. It set up an expert advisory group and said it would work with industry on a voluntary AI safety standard and on options for voluntary labelling and watermarking of AI-generated material.

Why it matters

Developers and deployers in Australia learned the government was moving toward risk-based rules for high-risk AI, with voluntary measures now and binding ones still to be designed.
