Singapore bans realistic deepfakes of election candidates during campaigns

See how this story connects

Singapore’s Parliament passed the Elections (Integrity of Online Advertising) (Amendment) Bill on 15 October 2024. From the issue of the writ to the close of polling, it bans publishing, sharing or boosting digitally generated or manipulated online election ads that realistically show a candidate saying or doing something they did not. Individuals face up to S$1,000 in fines or 12 months in jail, and social media services that ignore a takedown direction face fines up to S$1 million.

Why it matters

Platforms operating in Singapore must remove election deepfakes on the Returning Officer’s direction, and voters and campaigns sharing them face criminal liability.
