See how this story connectsAn amendment to South Korea’s Public Official Election Act (Article 82-8), enacted by the National Assembly in December 2023, took effect on 29 January 2024. It bans making or distributing AI-generated campaign content that is hard to tell from reality during the 90 days before an election, with penalties of up to seven years in prison or fines of up to 50 million won, and requires labels on such content outside that window. The National Election Commission found 129 violating deepfakes between 29 January and 16 February, ahead of the 10 April parliamentary election.
