CMA says it has ‘real concerns’ about Big Tech’s grip on foundation models

See how this story connects

On 11 April 2024 the Competition and Markets Authority published an update paper on foundation models naming three linked risks: firms that control key inputs restricting access, incumbents using their consumer and business positions to distort choice, and partnerships entrenching market power. It counted more than 90 partnerships and strategic investments involving Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and NVIDIA. Chief executive Sarah Cardell said the CMA was stepping up merger scrutiny of these partnerships.

Why it matters

AI partnerships between large technology firms and model developers became candidates for UK merger review, which the CMA then opened for Microsoft and Inflection and for Amazon and Anthropic.
