Goldman Sachs estimates generative AI could expose 300 million full-time jobs to automation

See how this story connects

Goldman Sachs economists Joseph Briggs and Devesh Kodnani estimated in March 2023 that generative AI could expose the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs worldwide to automation. They found roughly two-thirds of US occupations exposed to some degree, with a quarter to half of the workload in those jobs open to replacement, and put the possible lift to global GDP at 7%, or almost $7 trillion, over ten years.

Why it matters

The 300 million figure became one of the most quoted estimates of AI’s effect on jobs in 2023, cited by employers, unions and policymakers weighing generative AI’s reach into office work.
