CMA proposes seven principles for competition in AI foundation models

See how this story connects

The Competition and Markets Authority published its initial review of foundation models on 18 September 2023 and proposed seven principles for developers and deployers: accountability, access, diversity, choice, flexibility, fair dealing and transparency. The review covered competition and consumer protection only and left copyright, online safety, data protection and security to other bodies. The CMA said it would report on take-up of the principles in early 2024.

Why it matters

Model developers and the cloud and chip firms supplying them learned which conduct the UK competition regulator would watch, including restricted access to inputs, self-preferencing, tying and bundling.
