ILO study finds generative AI more likely to augment jobs than automate them

See how this story connects

The International Labour Organization published “Generative AI and Jobs: A global analysis of potential effects on job quantity and quality” on 21 August 2023. Clerical work is the most exposed group, with nearly a quarter of its tasks highly exposed, and 5.5% of employment in high-income countries is potentially exposed to automation against about 0.4% in low-income countries. More than twice the share of women’s employment as men’s is potentially exposed to automation.

Why it matters

Governments and unions got a global, country-income breakdown of generative AI exposure, with clerical jobs held mostly by women flagged as most at risk.
