China’s rules on deep synthesis services take effect, requiring labels on synthetic media
See how this story connectsThe Provisions on the Administration of Deep Synthesis Internet Information Services, issued by the CAC, MIIT and the Ministry of Public Security as Order No. 12, took effect on 10 January 2023. Providers must verify users’ real identities, add technical marks to generated or edited content and prominent labels where it could confuse the public, such as face swaps, synthetic voices and chatbots. Face or voice editing tools need the separate consent of the person depicted and a security assessment.
Why it matters
Every company offering face swaps, voice cloning or text generation to users in China had to label output, verify users and assess security before the generative AI boom reached the country.
