China puts gallium and germanium exports under licence from 1 August 2023
See how this story connectsChina’s Ministry of Commerce and General Administration of Customs issued Announcement No. 23 of 2023 on 3 July, requiring an export licence for 14 gallium- and germanium-related items from 1 August 2023. The list has 8 gallium items, including gallium arsenide, gallium nitride and gallium oxide, and 6 germanium items, including germanium metal and germanium dioxide. Applicants must name the end user and end use.
Why it matters
Chipmakers and defence suppliers abroad that buy Chinese gallium and germanium now need export licences tied to named end users, giving Beijing a lever over semiconductor supply chains.
