Swedish MASAI trial finds AI-supported mammography reading cuts workload by 44%

See how this story connects

The Lancet Oncology published early results of the MASAI randomised trial, led by Kristina Lång of Lund University, on 2 August 2023. Among about 80,000 women in Sweden, AI-supported screening found 244 cancers against 203 with standard double reading, with the same 1.5% false-positive rate, and cut screen-reading workload by 44.3%. The researchers planned to report interval cancer rates after two years of follow-up.

Why it matters

Breast screening programmes short of radiologists got randomised-trial evidence that AI triage can cut reading work by 44% without raising false positives.
