MASAI trial: AI-supported mammography screening cuts interval cancers by 12%

ResearchHealthScienceSEConfirmed

Final results of Sweden's MASAI randomised trial of about 106,000 women, published in The Lancet, found AI-supported screening led to 12% fewer interval cancers (1.55 vs 1.76 per 1,000) than standard double reading. It also raised detection and cut radiologists' screen-reading workload by 44%, without more false positives.

Why it matters

It is the first randomised evidence that AI in population screening improves a hard clinical outcome, strengthening the case for national programmes to adopt it.
