Microsoft announces seven MAI models trained in-house, including MAI-Thinking-1
See how this story connectsMustafa Suleyman announced seven Microsoft AI models: MAI-Thinking-1, a mid-sized reasoning model Microsoft says is preferred to Claude Sonnet 4.6 in blind human comparisons; MAI-Code-1-Flash, a 5 billion active-parameter coding model built into GitHub Copilot and VS Code; MAI-Image-2.5 and a Flash variant; MAI-Transcribe-1.5 across 43 languages; and MAI-Voice-2 in 15 languages with a Flash version to come. The models are distributed on Microsoft Foundry and slated for OpenRouter, Fireworks and Baseten, and developers will be able to tune the weights. Microsoft says it trains its reasoning models from scratch and does not distil from other labs, cites a 1.4x efficiency gain from its Maia 200 chip, and says an MAI model tuned for Excel matches GPT-5.4 at up to a tenth of the cost.
Why it matters
Microsoft now ships a full in-house model line on its own silicon, reducing how much of its stack depends on OpenAI.
