South Korea’s privacy regulator suspends new downloads of the DeepSeek app

See how this story connects

South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission said new downloads of DeepSeek’s app were suspended from 6pm on 15 February 2025, after the company admitted it had not fully followed Korean data protection law. The web service stayed available. The commission said downloads would resume once DeepSeek fixed its handling of personal data, and told existing users not to enter personal information.

Why it matters

Korean users lost access to new DeepSeek app installs, and foreign AI app makers learned that Korea’s privacy regulator will pull an app from stores over data handling.
