GMO confirms the AI penetration-testing tool ARTEX behind attacks on Japanese companies

See how this story connects

GMO Cybersecurity by Ierae said on 19 October 2026 that the attack infrastructure behind recent breaches of Japanese companies ran ARTEX, an autonomous AI penetration-testing system. The host it examined targeted about 20 Japanese companies, nine of them in one industry. A wider search found six more AI-driven attack hosts aimed at Japanese companies in digital gifts, retail, education, printing, marketing, insurance, finance, e-commerce, media and logistics. Eight of the companies GMO saw targeted had already announced data leaks in September or October, and GMO has passed its findings to law enforcement. CrowdStrike had earlier tied ARTEX to a campaign against South Korean financial institutions that began in late September; AFP reported that the tool’s Chinese developer closed access to its source code this month.

Why it matters

One AI tool is now confirmed in breaches in Japan and South Korea, run as separate campaigns with a host for each country and industry.
