UNESCO asks governments to regulate generative AI in schools, with an age limit of 13

See how this story connects

UNESCO launched its Guidance for Generative AI in Education and Research on 7 September 2023 during Digital Learning Week in Paris. It sets out seven steps for governments, including data protection and privacy standards, a minimum age of 13 for AI tools in the classroom and teacher training. A UNESCO survey of more than 450 schools and universities had found that fewer than 10% had formal guidance on generative AI.

Why it matters

Education ministries without their own rules got an international reference for age limits, data protection and teacher training on generative AI.
