OECD Council updates its definition of an AI system

See how this story connects

On 8 November 2023 the OECD Council revised the AI system definition in its 2019 Recommendation on AI. An AI system is now a machine-based system that, for explicit or implicit objectives, infers from its input how to generate outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations or decisions that can influence physical or virtual environments. The text adds that systems vary in autonomy and adaptiveness after deployment.

Why it matters

Every government that adheres to the OECD Recommendation on AI now works from this wording when deciding which software counts as an AI system.
