OECD ministers revise the AI Principles to cover generative AI

See how this story connects

The OECD Ministerial Council Meeting in Paris on 3 May 2024 adopted revisions to the 2019 Recommendation on AI. The revised principles add information integrity and misinformation, call for safeguards that let humans override, repair or safely decommission AI systems that risk undue harm, name environmental sustainability, and ask for interoperable governance across jurisdictions.

Why it matters

Japan’s government says the revision follows the G7 Hiroshima AI Process, and GPAI membership is tied to the same Recommendation, so the changes reach companies through several frameworks.
