ECMWF launches the alpha version of its own AI forecasting system

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts launched the alpha of its Artificial Intelligence/Integrated Forecasting System (AIFS), a graph neural network model it scores against its physics-based IFS, and began publishing AIFS forecasts on its website next to other AI models.

Why it matters

Europe’s main weather centre started building its own AI forecasting model, and it later moved the AIFS into operational use in 2025.
