Google DeepMind published GraphCast in Science, an AI model that produces 10-day global weather forecasts in under a minute and that it says is more accurate than ECMWF’s High Resolution Forecast, the standard physics-based system. DeepMind open-sourced the code, and ECMWF was already running a live experiment with GraphCast’s forecasts.

Why it matters

Weather agencies could run medium-range forecasts on a single machine in a minute instead of hours on supercomputers, and ECMWF began testing AI forecasts alongside its own.
