India’s IT ministry tells platforms to warn users against deepfakes under IT Rules

See how this story connects

MeitY issued an advisory to all intermediaries on 26 December 2023 requiring them to tell users in plain language what content Rule 3(1)(b) of the IT Rules prohibits, including misinformation and impersonation such as deepfakes, at registration, at every login and at each upload. Platforms must explain penalties under the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act and report violations to law enforcement. Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar said the ministry would watch compliance and could amend the rules.

Why it matters

Social media companies serving Indian users had to put deepfake warnings into sign-up and upload flows, and the government said it could tighten the IT Rules if they did not comply.
