India’s IT ministry tells platforms to label AI content, then drops its approval rule

See how this story connects

India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued an advisory on 1 March 2024 telling intermediaries and platforms to get explicit government permission before offering under-tested or unreliable AI models to users in India, to label such models and to file an action-taken report. A revised advisory on 15 March removed the permission requirement and instead required platforms to tell users that outputs may be unreliable, for example through a consent pop-up, and to label AI-generated content with labels, metadata or unique identifiers.

Why it matters

AI developers and platforms serving India were told to label synthetic content and warn users about unreliable outputs, the duties India later wrote into its 2026 IT Rules amendment.
