The Government of India selected Bengaluru startup Sarvam AI on 26 April 2025 under the IndiaAI Mission’s foundation-model pillar, with dedicated government compute to train an indigenous model from scratch. Sarvam said it would build reasoning and voice models for Indian languages, with Sarvam-Large, Sarvam-Small and Sarvam-Edge variants.

Why it matters

Public money and GPUs went to a private Indian lab to train a national model. Indian government users get a domestic option and other bidders a benchmark.
