EU Digital Services Act duties start for 19 very large platforms and search engines

See how this story connects

Four months after the Commission designated them on 25 April 2023, 17 very large online platforms and 2 search engines, among them Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, Google Search and Bing, had to comply with the full Digital Services Act from 25 August 2023. They must assess systemic risks such as disinformation and election manipulation each year, label ads, offer a recommender feed not based on profiling and stop profiling-based ads to children.

Why it matters

The largest platforms became answerable to the Commission for how they handle disinformation, synthetic media and risks to minors, with independent audits and researcher data access.
