European Commission tells largest platforms to label AI deepfakes during elections
See how this story connectsThe European Commission presented guidelines on 26 March 2024 under Article 35 of the Digital Services Act for very large online platforms and search engines on reducing risks to elections, with specific measures for the June 2024 European Parliament elections. Platforms whose services can create or spread generative AI content are told to assess those risks and clearly label AI-generated content such as deepfakes, and to publish post-election reviews of how their measures worked.
Why it matters
Very large platforms operating in the EU that departed from these measures had to show the Commission other equally effective ways of meeting their DSA risk duties during the 2024 elections.
